S. MARIA DI COLLEMAGGIO
Santa Maria di Collemaggio - L'Aquila It can be considered the most famous basilica in Abruzzo, because of its architectural and historical importance.

It was started in 1275 by Pietro da Morrone (then Celestino V) who, coming back from Lyon, stopped to rest near Collemaggio. Pietro dreamt of the Virgin Mary’s desire for a temple dedicated to her. On the left of the basilica there is the Holy Door.

BASILICA DI S. BERNARDINO DA SIENA
Basilica San Bernardino - L'Aquila Its construction was started in 1454, shortly after San Bernardino da Siena’s death (Franciscan and preacher, he stayed in L’Aquila and founded the congregation of San Bernardino Friars).

It is the biggest Renaissance church in Abruzzo: the façade is ascribed to Cola dell’Amatrice and presents three superimposed orders in the three different classic styles, Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.
